The CHRISTUS Ochsner SWLA Foundation, in partnership with First Federal Bank of Louisiana and Westlake Chemical, is helping local students start the school year prepared, supported and ready to succeed.

Following a month-long community donation drive, CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital hosted a backpack-packing event in July, bringing together volunteers from all three organizations to assemble 400 backpacks with nonperishable food and essential hygiene products for local children and families. Together, volunteers packed 6,844 food items and 5,200 hygiene items.

The collaborative effort reflects the power of community partnership and service while advancing CHRISTUS Health's commitment to improving health and well-being beyond the hospital walls. By helping families access essential resources, the initiative addresses critical community needs and supports healthier outcomes for children throughout Southwest Louisiana.

“This effort is proof of what is possible when the community comes together around a shared purpose," said Patricia Prudhomme, executive director of the CHRISTUS Ochsner SWLA Foundation. “We are proud to partner with organizations that share our commitment to strengthening the communities we serve. Collaboration amplifies our efforts and allows us to reach more people and make a meaningful difference in the lives of local children.”

The backpacks were distributed to students at Vinton Elementary on Aug. 14, ensuring every student begins the school year with access to essential resources that support their health, well-being and academic success.

“Thanks to the generosity and teamwork of our volunteers and community partners, we were able to provide a backpack to every student at Vinton Elementary,” Prudhomme said. “These backpacks represent much more than supplies. They contain food and everyday essentials that can help ease the burden of hunger and hardship for local families. When children have reliable access to nutritious food and necessities, they are better able to focus on learning, growing and reaching their full potential.”

The backpack initiative is part of the CHRISTUS Ochsner SWLA Foundation’s ongoing efforts to address social needs that impact health and to improve outcomes for children and families across Southwest Louisiana.
